I can't blame his choice of gifts, though. It's surprising how much of a difference simple comforts can make. A good meal, pleasant surroundings, nice scents... I find myself relying on such things when I'm in a darker place.

What kinds of arguments?

About the strategies his unit employs in the violent games. I cannot in good conscience approve of them. And even though I... understand with my mind why they choose to play in such a way, I cannot understand it with my heart.

Does it disturb you? That they'd be willing to use such methods.

... Not as such. What does make me upset is that they act so... unconcerned about it. That... just because they think their choices justified, or because they didn't have another choice... the suffering that results from it doesn't matter much. That it is right to play so brutally.

[He shakes his head, clearly annoyed]

And just because their unit used to be villainized, they seem to think it fine to play to that stereotype. In the end, I don't understand it.

That is how we live with the things we have done. By letting ourselves care less.

... I understand it a little bit better now. But for the longest time... I could not.

It was a stroke of luck Emet-Selch decided to reach out to me in the end. It was on the same day that I'd decided that in order for me to still fit in with them, I would need to learn to care less as well.

It was only then he finally admitted that most of his behaviour is just an act.

Of course it is. He is as soft and sentimental as ever, just better at hiding it.

And the last thing he, or the rest of us, would ever want is for you to become as jaded as we have.
