Well, it might be worth a try. Some of my partners and people I know struggle with nightmares - almost everyone here does, really, I think. And for some of them, having someone else being around while they sleep helps. I can't profess to know how exactly it works, but I suppose the mind and the body still have some background awareness even while we are not actively conscious? And sensing the presence of someone they trust possibly helps.
